Operation Medicine Cabinet: A New Way to Combat Rx Drug Abuse

This Saturday police departments around New Jersey are opening their doors as part of Operation Medicine Cabinet, a program in which people can drop off unwanted or expired prescription drugs. The program is being done in conjunction with the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey.

Hopefully this program will help solve two problems: the problems of prescription drug abuse (which you can determine with a home drug test) and the pollution problem caused by dumping prescription drugs. The Philadelphia Inquirer gives us some details on the latter: traces of over 56 prescription drugs and/or byproducts were discovered in the city's tap water last year.

They are often a great clearinghouse for news and information, but today we have the scoop on people and organizations who have stepped up to fight drunk driving. OxyContin Pill Won't Eliminate Need for OxyContin Test

As covered elsewhere on this blog, OxyContin is an extremely dangerous drug when abused - 11 people die a day in Florida from prescription drug overdoses - hence the existence of an OxyContin Test. The producers of Oxy (as it is sometimes called), Purdue Pharma, have to their credit taken note, and come out with a new version of the pill. But with no guarantee that it cannot be manipulated for abuse, it means days without an OxyContin Test are not behind us.

As reported by the AP (click to read on SFgate.com), the improvement to the drug is a new plastic coating, designed to make it harder to inject or snort. The Food and Drug Administration is skeptical but sees that there could be some advantage. At this point, with prescription drug abuse the primary culprit behind drug overdoses nationwide, something has to be done (please note: the OxyContin Drug Test is FDA Approved). The FDA has abandoned public service advisories and is now pressuring companies to come out with safer products.

This is a certainly a good development, but it remains to be seen how it will affect the patterns of OxyContin abuse, and if it actually comes out, as it has not yet been approved. Perhaps it will be most helpful for kids, as teenagers in particular are experimenting with prescription drugs. Reuters has even reported that OxyContin may be more addictive for teens than adults. Nicotine Testing & A New Study Suggesting Even Light Smoking Harms

A new study suggests that the surge in nicotine test use by employers may not be uncalled for, even as it pertains to young adults.

The takeaway from the study summarized in US News and World Report is this: "Smoking just one cigarette stiffens the arteries of young adults by 25 percent, says a new study." Stiffened arteries increase the risk for heart disease among other problems, and suggest the growth of the nicotine test in pre-employment screenings may not be unwarranted. The test went like this:

Arterial stiffness was measured in smokers and non-smokers, ages 18 to 30, at rest and post exercise. 5-6 a day smokers were asked not to smoke for 12 hrs before their first exercise test. Before the second exercise test, smokers were allowed one cigarette. Before the final test, they were asked to chew a piece of nicotine gum.

What were the results of this scientific nicotine test? Post exercise, arterial stiffness in non-smokers decreased 3.6 percent. But smokers' arterial stiffness increased 2.2 percent after exercise. Keep in mind, they hadn't had a cigarette at this point. Once they did, arterial stiffness increased 24.5 percent.

This test is significant for nicotine tests and some of our perceptions about young people smoking. It seems that some people believe smoking when you are young is harmless, as long as you intend to quit. Yet this study shows that it is not - artery health is affected, especially in relation to exercise.

As more employers mandate no smoking policies at work and at home for their employees, it may be worthwhile to examine the statistics that underlie these decisions. Why do you have to take a nicotine test at work these days? The CDC provides the answer.

According to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the CDC, "during 2001–2004, average annual smoking-attributable health care expenditures were approximately $96 billion, compared to $75 billion in 1998. As the third installment in the series on prescription drug awareness (see the first entry "The Valium Drug Test & The Xanax Drug Test - Fighting Prescription Drug Abuse, Part I" and the second entry "Prescription Drug Problem Grows") today I present a review of a new movie on Oxycontin abuse and where the drug supply originates. This is a film that drives home the necessity of dealing with this problem on a large scale and even on a home drug test scale, which you can do with an Oxycontin Test.

In this film for Current TV's "Vanguard" series by Mariana van Zeller, the crew finds, in her words, that Florida is becoming "the Colombia of prescription drugs." As I wrote previously, prescription drug abuse is increasingly making up a larger share of America's drug abuse problem. Even high profile news outlets like CNN have begun to pay attention to the phenomenon. The upside is that all this attention will lead to people learning more about the harmful effects of prescription drug abuse and the routes to recovery, such as a Xanax Drug Test aka a Valium Drug Test.

What We Have Learned From The Tobacco Ban

There are an array of opinions out there about the new bill signed into law by President Obama, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, but the aim of the law seems clear - to prevent kids and young adults from taking up smoking. According to Lawrence Deyton, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco, “Children are three times as likely as adults to smoke a flavored cigarette.” That is why the new law bans the sale of candy, fruit, or clove flavored cigarettes.

Breaking Down the Stats: Drug Use in the United States

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) has published its 2007 state by state drug use report. The full report can be viewed at their site - we will examine only a few drug use statistics and try to identify what this means for the home drug test world and for the products within it - things like a hair drug test or a urine test.

What we learn vis-a-vis home drug testing from this report is that drug use is concentrated among the young. For example, 8.1% of the US population over the age of 12 had used an illicit drug in the past month. The drug use is concentrated in the population aged 18-25 - 19.77% percent of people in this age bracket admitted to illicit drug use in the past month. The 12-17 age bracket rates at a 9.66% in this category, slightly higher than the overall population. This is no doubt food for thought for someone thinking about buying a home drug test and wondering what sort of home drug testing they should embark upon. In 10 states, more than 10% of the population aged 12-17 admitted to illicit drug use in the past month.

If you look at marijuana use in particular, the results are more drastic. Although 10.2% of those over 12 used marijuana in the past year, 27.7% of young adults 18-25 used marijuana in the past year.

Flashback - to the Origins of Drug Testing in Sports

Nowadays, you are probably used to the prevalence of drug testing - it is used by parents, by coaches, by schools, by law enforcement, by employers...the list goes on. Of course it was not always this way. For example, did you know that Olympic drug testing first debuted in 1968?

Interestingly enough, the first athlete to be disqualified based on a drug test, Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall, was disqualified for alcohol consumption before the race. He earned this dubious honor at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. I suppose the fellow could've used an alcohol test, no?

Since the 1968 Olympics, drug testing has certainly grown in the athletic world. The NCAA, for example, has since 1986 tested for illegal drugs and performance-enhancing drugs. Testing positive in the NCAA results in the athlete losing a year of eligibility.

Having to undergo a drug test is no new experience for high school athletes either. Illinois recently passed a law that states that any high school athlete in the state can be tested randomly during sports season.

An interesting debate in sports testing is whether or not to include drugs like marijuana in testing efforts. Perhaps owing to the fact that marijuana is legal in some of the countries competing in the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee does not impose sanctions on athletes that might test positive for marijuana. The NCAA, however, does. Some of the arguments center around whether a marijuana drug test is necessary to determine whether a sports competion will be fair. Gary Green, who has long been involved in NCAA testing, says "There's a big debate about whether marijuana should be on the (banned-drugs) list...it's definitely not a performance enhancer." How A Hair Drug Test Works - And Who Uses Them
